THE WAR BETWEEN QUAD CORE PROCESSORS
A new war has been just begun in the world of cellphones, the war of titans, the huge powerful beasts, ‘The quad cores’. The stage has been set for them. What we want here is that these beasts become more powerful and the same time maintain standard of reliability and performance. Are these quad cores going to keep their promise in all of departments? Here is a brief review on different quad core processors which are being used and will be used in the near future.
Some of the big brands like LG, Samsung, Huawei, ZTE have already announced and some have released their quad core handsets. They are using different Processor technologies, like Samsung is using the ‘Exynos 4212’ Quad chipset in Galaxy S III and also the ‘Meizu MX’, while LG and HTC are using ‘Nvidia Tegra 3’ powered chipsets in their most awaited LG Optimus 4X HD and HTC one X. While some companies are using the above processors, others will be acquiring ‘Qqualcomm snapdragon S4\ (Qualcomm’s quad core processors). So the battle is not actually between the handsets it’s between the processors they are equipped with.
The Exynos 4212, Tegra 3, and Snapdragon S4 are totally different technologies. Exynos is Samsung’s own make, and the remaining two are well-known in Quad Processor circles. Tegra 3 is from Nvidia and snapdragon S4 is from Qualcomm.
Qualcomm stated last month that its quad-core Snapdragon chip, the APQ064, will join its S4 line of products. Based on ARM architecture, the S4 chips will run at clock speeds between 1.5GHz and 2.5GHz. Qualcomm’s Vice President of Product Management Raj Talluri, confirmed that the first phones with quad-core Snapdragon chips will ship around the holiday season next year.
According to Nvidia, quad-core processors improve performance during multitasking as well as the performance of multithreaded applications. Nvidia says a quad-core processor will bring to your phone a level of performance comparable to that of a desktop computer.
Following are the bench mark test of the quad core processors which tells the whole story
The Qualcomm quad-core processor with a powerful GPU shows up better performance on graphical level, according to Tweakers.Net. The benchmark has been published on the GL Benchmark site.
The benchmark reveals that the Snapdragon S4 with Adreno 320 GPU is more powerful when compared to others in the market. The benchmarks include GLBenchmark 2.1.2 Egypt offscreen, PRO offscreen and AnTuTu. The GLBenchmark 2.1 is an upgrade to the GLBenchmark 2.0.x series. It offers a more scalable test environment. It features off-screen measurements, warm-up style throughput tests and high quality rendering.
S4 is made of 28 nm processor while Exynos is made with 32nm, while a5 is made with 45nm. So snapdragon S4 having 28 nm less than all the competitors, have high performance, and less battery usage. For having less battery consumption Tegra 3 is provided with 4+1 cores, yes that is 5 core, but one extra core is actually of low configuration to run music, videos to have reduce battery consumption. Hence 5th core is a battery saver core. Whatever it is bench mark test says it all, snapdragon S4 is on the top of all its competitors.
The Smartphones have just entered a new phase with Quad Cores taking over their Processing Power. With the next I Phone (I Phone 5) due to release this year, it will be interesting to see if it can match the power these Quad Cores offer.
