FORD UNVEILS SHELBY COBRA GT 500 WITH 850 HP ENGINE
WHAT IS THE IMPORTANCE OF GT 500 FOR FORD
With Ford now locked in a duel of the ages with Chevrolet as the Mustang and Camaro square off on the street, track and showrooms, Ford has a new answer to Chevy’s range-topping Camaro ZL1 – and it is the heavily updated Shelby GT500.
THIS CAR IS ACTUALLY A TRIBUTE TO A LEGEND
To honor the late Carroll Shelby a group calling itself the “Friends of Carroll Shelby” and consisting of numerous firms including the likes of Ford, Shelby American and Ford Racing has built a one-off tribute car based on the 2013 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500. Unveiled this weekend at one of the events surrounding the 2012 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, the special Mustang has proven a hit, not only because of its significance to the automotive world but also because of its distinctive styling and impressive performance credentials.
IT HAS BEST OF THE BEST ENGINE
Thanks to a Ford Racing TVS series 2300 (2.3-liter) Whipple supercharger and and computer tuning. , the car’s 5.8-liter V-8 engine now delivers a breathtaking 850 horsepower .662 hp is its delivered power without supercharger.
UTILIZES ALL ITS POWER
To make sure it can make the most of all that power, the design team increased the width of the rear tires. They now measure 345 millimeters across and are wrapped around equally-massive wheels measuring 20×13-inch rear and 20×10-inch front wheels. .
To fit the wheels in, as well as create a look reminiscent of Shelby’s legendary Cobra race cars, Shelby American provided a specially designed aluminum hood scoop together with front splitter and rear diffuser . Shelby reworked the rear fascia and added a new diffuser with dual exhaust instead of the center exhaust on older cars. The car has even been painted the same Guardsman Blue with Wimbledon White stripes that graced so many of Shelby’s Cobra racers built in the 1960s.
MANAGE THE RPM THROUGH LAUNCH CONTROL SYSTEM
A new, defeatable launch control system has been developed that allows drivers unprecedented levels of control, allowing for specific rpm launch points to be chosen based on elevation, tire and street temperature and other variables. This system is fully unique to the SVT lineup in that it is incorporated into both the engine control and traction control systems.
Significant aerodynamic work was done on the new Shelby GT500 to ensure the car has proper downforce for optimum performance at all speeds. Engineers were able to determine how to harness the air that was moving around and through the car to improve the cooling system, maximize downforce and minimize drag. Both cars also receive upgraded cooling systems that Shelby says will have the car running 30-degrees cooler in normal operation than the stock GT500.
Don’t think that the new V8 is a one-trick pony, either – rated at a respectable 15 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway, it’s also the most efficient engine with over 550 horsepower in America according to Ford.
The car can be found at the Ford display in the expo area at the Rolex MontereyMotorsports Reunion this weekend. Ford plans to showcase it at a number of other events in the coming months, some of which will include track time.
Meanwhile, Ford announced a road that runs through its product development center in Dearborn, Mich., will be renamed Carroll Shelby Way.
Pricing hasn’t been finalized yet.
