DARPA developing unmanned sub hunters
In old times submarine combats were not really taking serious but in the last two decades we have seen a rapid improvement in this military area and the reason is the diesel electric submarines capable of demolishing the defense of the opponent.Understanding the sensitivity of matter DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency)has warded a contract to the Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) of McLean, Virginia to develop unmanned submarine hunters to counter any infiltration across the territory without human intervention.
Accepting the fact that nuclear boats are better than diesel elctric submarines but the story doesnt end here yes they have their own strong points on the basis of which they got the upper hand some time as when they operate at battery they doesnt produce noise as they dont include pump , gear system in their design.Regardless of the fact that they have not long range shooting capability even they dont remain submerged for months like nuclear boats but their low cost and the competency to go to shallow coastal areas really make their case stronger.
Anticipating the lethalness of submarines DARPA started working on a program and this DARPA’s Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) Continuous Trail Unmanned Vessel (ACTUV) program developed a robot ship which runs on autonomous system means that dont need any assistance to make any move but unfortunately they will not do any mercy with the sailor who often loses way during their work. They can track even the thousand miles away submarine and has a large hearted propulsion system which can give it such a mighty drift that they can easily outrun submarines. the robot ship will be much cheaper to build and operate – perhaps a tenth of the cost of a conventional sub hunter.
The concept has been evaluated and the risk assessment has been done .SAIC has been given task to work on design, construction and demonstration of the vessel.Hope this technology will be implemented in other unmanned ship operations too.
